8 secretly aggressive email phrases and when to use them

8 secretly aggressive email phrases and when to use them8 secretly aggressive email phrases and when to use themIf you work in an office, you probably get approximately one billion emails a day with all sorts of corporate phrases that no one actually says in real life. Honestly, the fact that emojis and GIFs are semi-taboo in the corporate email world is beyond my understanding. Yes, Imthatmillennial. The worst parte of email is that you never know what the f*ck people are TRYING to say. Sometimes it feels like people are trying to be so politically correct in corporate chatter that meanings get muddled. Like does following up actually mean, why the heck did you not read my message? (hint yes, it does).Follow Ladders on FlipboardFollow Ladders magazines on Flipboard covering Happiness, Productivity, Job Satisfaction, Neuroscience, and moreHave you ever asked a co-worker a question and had them come back with something like, Per my belastung note To have your stomach drop and be like, ouch. This feels passive-aggressive? Youre not alone.Whats a straightforward girl boss to do?To help you understand all the work drams coming your way in your inbox (grab some popcorn, babes), we have gladly written out a full-on dictionary (ok, eight) secretly aggressive email phrases, and what they mean. So next time you have that stomach drop feeling at work you can totally understand it Lucky freaking you. Here are 8 secretly aggressive email phrases and what they mean.Per My Last MessageThis meansWhy didnt you pay attention to my last message? Your colleague is basically telling you to f*ck off and they already told you this answer. Freaking ouch. This phrase is basically like saying, no Im not going to just simply answer the question you asked. Im going to acknowledge that you are literally an idiot and you should have more carefully read myemail. I dont love this phrase because odds are if someone is asking you a question that you already know the answer to, there was something unclear in your last email. Please AdviseThis meansNo, Im not going to make a decision, you make one. Maybe youre in an argument between two people and need them to make decisions for you, or maybe youve just had enough for one day. Whatever it is, this statement is passive-aggressive because you could just say, what do you think? To ClarifyThis meansSomething was misunderstood. Must clarify in a politically correct way so theres not some massive confusion and yet, I still look like the good guy.PS. I like this one.Thank You in AdvanceThis meansYou havent agreed to what Im about to ask you, but the expectation is that you are going to do it anyway. If you are asking someone to go above and beyond for you, skip this phrase It makes it sound like you are forcing someone to do something for you they havent agreed to yet.Following UpThis meansYou havent responded to my email in the normal time frame. Im going to remind you that you havent responded by started my message with following up . Lol. Like I know youve emailed me three times, of course, youre following up. (Although being the extremely timely rolle that I am I use this one.every day)Checking In On UpdatesThis meansYou probably didnt finish a project or the person emailing you has crazy expectations. They want updates sooner than you provided, so they passive-aggressively emailed you about it. And although you want to replay back something equally as passiv- aggressive like, k, thanks you cant. Ugh.Friendly ReminderThis meansI mean, how many different ways are there to say, f*cking respond to me?? I could probably think of a million more. Once again another passive-aggressive way of saying, you didnt respond so writing you another message to force you to email back to me. K cool. Not Sure If You Got My Last MessageThis meansTrying to be nice and be like, I know you saw my last note but didnt respond so Im going to try and play innocent. There you have it. How to Ask for Time Off at a New Job with Examples

How to Ask for Time Off at a New Job with ExamplesHow to Ask for Time Off at a New Job with ExamplesAsking for time offwhen youre about to start or you have recently started a new job can be a bit tricky. If you make your request at the wrong time, or ask in an inconsiderate way, you could come across as someone who doesnt care about the company or the job. However, if your request for time off is well thought out, you can avoid (or at least soften) any negative impact. When to Ask for Time Off at a New Job If you know you need time off for a vacation or other commitment before starting a new job, its advisable to broach the topicbeforeyour actual start date. The best time to mention that you need time off isafteryou havebeen offered the job, butbefore you accept it. By being upfrontabout it, your supervisor knows youre not trying to take advantage of the company. And if you communicateyour needs before beginning the job, an employer will likely be understanding of yourrequest. P eople make commitments (whether its to friendsor family) in advance of being offered a job, and most employers will be sympathetic to this. If a need for time off arisesafteryou have started a new job, then broaching the subject will likely be more challenging. That said, true family emergencies, deaths, and health crises are all perfectly valid reasons for needing time off. On the other hand, youll need to prove to your new employer why you warrant time off for a vacation or another seemingly personal event. No matter what the reason for needing time off, ask your employer as soon as possible. He or she will appreciate receiving a heads up well in advance. Tips for Asking for Time Off Know the company rules. Before asking for time off, review any company policies on paid time off, vacation days, personal days, etc. Some companies are very flexible and offer employees anunlimited number of days off. Others require you to work for a certain amount of time before you begin to accrue days off. Make sure you know what the policy is at work, so that you know whether what you are asking for is generally acceptable or not. If you have not yet accrued vacation days, you might ask if the employer can loan you vacation days that you will be earning in the near future. Many companies are willing to do that. Consider the zeiteinteilung. While you want to tell your anfhrer as soon as possible, you also want to think of the specific timing of the request. Its always a good idea to ask for a favor (like taking time off) after you have done something to impress your boss. For example, you might make the request at the end of a meeting in which you summarize your progress for the week, or after you have completed a big project. Also think about the timing of the time off itself. Try not to ask for time off during a particularly busy time at work. Ask your boss.Be sure toaskyour boss rather than simplytellinghim or her. You can say something like, I have accrued two vacation d ays, and I am wondering if I can use them the week of August 18. Does that work for you and the rest of the department? By phrasing it as a question, you are showing that you respect your boss, and that you want to make sure your time off works for the kollektiv. Give just enough details.Whatever your unique situation is, you should share enough details with your employer about why you need time off so that your request comes across as legitimate. Whenever possible, provide documentation such as a funeral announcement and/or a doctors note, even if your employer did not ask for it. Be sure not to lie. If you are going away for a friends wedding or a vacation, say so. You dont need to provide any extra information just keep it brief and honest. Plan how your work will be covered. Before asking for time off, think about how you will manage any work you might miss. Will you submit your report a day early? Have you asked someone if they could cover your shift (only ask someone who is a trusted employee, who you are confident will do the work well)? If possible, include a pledge to work extra hours before and after your planned absence to ensure that all of your tasks are completed on time. You could also offer to work remotely, or at least stay in contact by phone or emaille. Being proactive shows that you are a responsible employee and that you take yourwork seriously. Follow up.After telling your boss inemailor in person, follow up with an email a couple of days before you take the time off. You can send a short email saying something like, I just wanted to remind you that I will not be at work on Tuesday, November 2. You might also add information on who will be covering for you, or what work you will be doing in advance of your leaving. This reminds your boss of your time off and also of your sense of responsibility. How to Use Bullet Points in a Resume

How to Use Bullet Points in a Resume How to Use Bullet Points in a Resume As employers generally have hundreds of resumes to look through they only spend seconds scanning through each one. Employers dont want to wade through long paragraphs so using resume bullet points is an effective way of getting to the point and getting noticed.Should a resume have bullet points?  Yes, using bullet points on a resume  clearly and concisely highlights your strengths. You can showcase your most relevant accomplishments and you most important skills and qualifications without burying them in chunks of text. The resume bullet points you include should differ for each job application according to the job requirements. Using a resume builder  allows you to make quick edits for each application, allowing you to tailor your resume. When to use bullet points in a resumeYou should use bullet points on your resume in your work experience section to list your duties and accomplishments. How many bullet points per job on a resume? This depends on how many jobs you include and how mu ch space you have for each, but between 2-4 is a good number. Remember you need to keep your resume as short and concise as possible. You can also use bullet points in other sections such as your skills, education, and accomplishments. In general, if theres a choice between writing resume bullet points or paragraphs  it is generally better to choose bullet points. How to write resume  bullet pointsThe first thing to do is to carefully read through the job description for each job application and to identify the key job requirements for each position. Pick out the keywords and work them (and synonyms of them) into your resume. Its essential to show why youre the right candidate for a specific position rather than just submitting a generic, one-size-fits-all resume. Make each bullet point relevant to the role youre applying for. Changing the bullets using resume templates is an easy way of creating a tailored resume for each application. You should include 2-4  effective resume bullet poi nts beneath the basic job information (job title, employer details, job role). You should use simple, attractive, readable bullets such as circles or hyphens. Whichever style you choose, be consistent throughout your resume.Make sure you  prioritize your bullet points. Place the most important and  most relevant points nearer the top  of your resume, and the less important ones nearer the bottom. Each bullet should start with a strong, dynamic action verb (in the past tense) followed by what you produced or accomplished. You should also try to quantify your achievements as this is convincing for employers.Resume bullet point examplesHere are some examples of effective bullet points for a resume which are positive, concise, and clearly demonstrate and highlight strengths:Work experienceWeb Designer, Falcon Development, 2010-2013Created over 20 websites which operated in 16 countriesUsed numerous platforms and programs including..The average website attracted over 30,000 visitors a mon thTeam Leader, Bingo Car Insurance, 2012-PresentLed and helped train a customer service team of over 15 employeesDesigned and implemented a departmental initiative schemeOversaw a sales increase of 20% over an 18-month periodNurse, Conquest Hospital, 2013-2016Provided award-winning care to a ward with 18 patientsHelped to recruit and train junior nursesIntroduced a new system for ensuring cleanlinessIf youre writing a student resume or an entry-level resume, it may be the case that you need to emphasize other accomplishments such as your qualifications. What NOT to Say at the First Job Interview

What NOT to Say at the First Job Interview What NOT to Say at the First Job Interview What NOT to Say at the First Job Interview Your first job interview with a potential employer is a true test of watching what you say and how you say it. The employer tries to get a sense of who you are and what your work ethic is all about, so everything you say is open to interpretation. Nothing will derail your chances of moving on to a second interview faster than saying something with a hidden meaning. What do I mean? Check out the following examples of what NOT to say in your first interview: I'm a bit nervous about driving in the city. What they hear: I want this job but I'm not sure I can handle the stress of the city. What you should say: I'm excited about working in the city! I'm planning to start a family as soon as possible. What's your policy on maternity leave? What they hear: I might only be here for a few months before I take off a big chunk of time. Will I get paid for it? What you should say: Nothing. Don't bring it up until after you're hired! Would my health insurance cover diabetes? What they hear: I have diabetes. (Find out why this is bad here.) What you should say: I hear you offer great health insurance; I look forward to hearing about it at the next interview. I need to work from home twice a week. What they hear: I have other obligations that will take priority over this job. What you should say: Nothing. Save your work-from-home demands until you have a job offer, which is when you can negotiate employment terms. What's the available salary range for this position? What they hear: Money is all that matters to me. What you should say: Nothing. Always let them bring it up first! I really need this job. What they hear: I really, really, really need this job. Come on, I'm desperate! What you should say: This sounds like my ideal job, I'm very interested in coming back for a second interview, if needed. Second and third interviews are a lot more flexible when it comes to topics of discussion. Wait until they're interested enough to hire you before you bring up things like benefits and salary!

Maines mighty microbreweries

Maine's mighty microbreweries Maine's mighty microbreweries After sailing Maine’s sparkling seas, kayaking and canoeing its pristine lakes, hiking its lofty mountains or schussing down its snow-covered slopes, what could be better than an icy-cold beer- especially a hand-crafted ale or lager from a local microbrewery or brewpub?Maine now ranks fifth in the nation for the number of breweries per capita. Even more amazing, Portland, its largest city, has the second highest number of breweries per capita after Portland, Oregon, where, most agree, America’s microbrewery trend began.   The Maine craft beer revolution, steadily brewing for nearly 30 years, shows no signs of slowing down. In 2013, Maine had 35 breweries and brewpubs.   Today, less than a year later, there are nearly 55. According to the Maine Brewers’ Guild, established in 1986, production will increase by 200% by 2018.Follow Ladders on Flipboard!Follow Ladders’ magazines on Flipboard covering Happiness, Productivity, Job Satisfaction, Neuroscience, and more!Beer lovers, esp ecially those in the East, who are familiar with offerings from top Maine microbreweries like Geary’s and Shipyard, no longer have to head to the West Coast to tour breweries making hand-crafted ales, stouts and other brews.   Nor do curious vacationers who might know little about hand-crafted beer but probably have heard that its taste, aroma and complexity rival that of fine wines.   From Kittery, at Maine’s southern tip, clear up to Bar Harbor, you can visit microbreweries and sample one of   a kind brews, or hunker down at friendly brewpubs to enjoy hand-crafted beers with fried clams or steamed lobster. The Maine Beer Trail, an informative map and guide to the state’s breweries, was designed by the Maine Brewers’ Guild to facilitate vacationers’ beer tasting adventures.   Though sampling these fine hand-crafted brews is reward enough, the Maine Beer Trail Pass, downloaded free from the guild’s website, offers gifts to the intrepid.   Visit 10 breweries, and get a tru cker hat.   Stop at 20, and you’ll get a T-shirt.   Visit all 50-odd breweries and brewpubs, and receive a special Prize Pack.Several breweries are off the beaten track, but most are along the coast in prime tourist territory like Kittery, Ogunquit and Kennebunk in the south; the City of Portland; Sebago and Naples in the Lakes Region northwest of Portland; Freeport, where thousands flock year-round to the famous outdoor gear emporium, L.L. Bean; and Mid-Coast Maine, home to Acadia National Park, seaside towns like Boothbay Harbor, Belfast, and Monhegan Island, site of a centuries-old artist’s colony. What’s more, in addition to sampling one of a kind beers, visitors get an up-close look at the brewer’s art and, in many cases, a chance to talk with brewers who all share a passion for creating ales and lagers reflecting centuries-old home brewing traditions. For families, a visit to one of Maine’s microbreweries offers young people the opportunity to learn about an industry t hat’s a model of old-fashioned Americana, helmed by husbands and wives, fathers and sons, and sometimes entire families. Many microbreweries are in interesting locales.   South of Portland, in the town of Lyman, just inland from Ogunquit- where Rocky Coast Brewing serves unfiltered English ales in a cozy brewpub- Funky Bow Brewery Beer Company gives tours and offers tastings on an organic farm.In Newcastle, in the Boothbay Harbor area, the Oxbow Brewing Co., with a distinctive logo of an owl bearing a keg in its talons, is a small farmhouse style brewery where you can taste seasonal ales as well as its experimental Freestyle Series, and buy limited release barrel-aged bottles and big jugs called growlers. In Bar Harbor, at the Atlantic Brewing Company- whose quirky logo depicts a fishing boat with a banner proclaiming, “Save the Ales!”- taste award winning Bar Harbor Blueberry Ale and deep, dark Coal Porter on a 10 acre farm surrounded by hops fields and pine woods.   While in town, also stop at Bar Harbor Brewing Company, home of nationally known beers like Thunder Hole Ale and Cadillac Mountain Stout, and Bar Harbor’s first microbrewery, established in 1990.Not actually a farm, Bray’s Brewpub Eatery, in a turn of the century Victorian farmhouse in the popular Lakes Region town of Naples, serves up Brandy Pond Blonde, Quaker Ridge Oatmeal Stout and other brews, as well as burgers and light fare. Also in the Lakes Region, stop in Harrison at the recently opened Pennesseewassee Brewing Company, or in Gorham at the brewery of Sebago Brewing Company, which opened in 1998, and has brewpubs in Kennebunk, Scarborough, Portland and Gorham. There are even a couple of resorts where you can immerse yourself in the brewery experience.   One is the Boothbay Resort Craft Brewery, a mile from downtown Boothbay Harbor.   Watch brewers work while dining indoors, or head to the outdoor  biergarten, and quaff in-house offerings as well as those by local “brethren br ewers.”   Along with tours, the resort has a bocce court, pool table and a game room to keep the little ones engaged. And, if you don’t have time for a tour or meal, take your beer to go in a growler.   Another resort brewery, northwest of Skowhegan and a little bit off the beaten path, is the Kennebec River Pub Brewery at Northern Outdoors resort.   Rent a lakeside cabin or pitch a tent along the Kennebec River, and enjoy white water rafting, fishing, hiking, ATVing and snowmobiling, along with hand-crafted brews.Sooner or later, Maine vacationers find their way to charming, seaside Portland, the state’s largest city, the site of a dozen microbreweries and the place where the Maine craft beer revolution began with the opening of the D.L. Geary Brewing Company in 1986, the same year the Maine Brewers’ Guild was established. Geary’s is still owned by husband and wife team David and Karen Geary and, despite its logo of a big Maine lobster, its beers have a decidedly English flair.   Not surprisingly, David Geary got his training while visiting the breweries of England and Scotland under the tutelage of Scottish nobleman and brewer Peter Maxwell Stuart. The brewery gives half-hour tours Monday through Friday, with tastings of signature beers like Geary’s Pale Ale, Hampshire Special Ale, Geary’s IPA and London Porter, seasonal brews like the refreshingly light Summer Ale, and limited edition beers like Oatmeal Stout and Oakie Doakie Scotch Ale. Gluten intolerant visitors can try IXNAY, the first gluten free beer made in Maine.   For non-tipplers, as well as children, the brewery makes root beer.Another well-known Portland microbrewery that also makes its own root beer is Sea Dog Brewing Co.   Established in 1993, Sea Dog has two brewpubs, one in South Portland and one in Topsham, northeast of Freeport and home to L.L. Bean.   At Sea Dog’s two brewpubs, enjoy innovative fare while tasting year-round and seasonal brews, including Blueberry Wheat Ale, made with Maine’s signature crop.   For a tour of Sea Dog’s brewing facilities, you’ll have to go to Bangor.   There you can visit the city’s second brewery, recently opened Geaghan Brothers Brewing Company, and just north in Amherst, another newcomer â€" the Square Tail Brewing Company. Also in Portland, nationally known Shipyard Brewing Company, which opened in 1994, runs a year-round brewpub in Eliot, and seasonal brewpubs at the Sunday River and Sugarloaf ski resorts.   At the Portland brewery, video tours are given daily, and full 1 ½-hour brewery tours (which must be reserved) are given Tuesday nights and, in June, July and August on Thursday nights.   Along with familiar beers you might have tried at eateries throughout the country or bought at your local supermarket, you’ll find rarities like the Shipyard Bourbon Barrel Aged Series, including Imperial Stout, Double Scottish Ale, Smashed Pumpkin Ale and Barley Wine.   The brewery also makes Capt’n Eli’s Soda, a line of soft drinks.Allagash Brewing Company, established in Portland a year after Shipyard, bills itself as New England’s original maker of Belgian style wheat beers.   Its range of brews includes Allagash White, flavored with curaçao liqueur, orange peel and spices, and Allagash Double Ale, made with seven different malts and in the style of Belgium’s Trappist Monks, whose beers are among the world’s most coveted.Allagash has yet another distinction.   It’s on Industrial Way, a short block of warehouses considered Maine’s craft beer crucible.   Here, some of Maine’s top microbreweries got their start.   Today, a new crop of microbreweries, run by recent college grads, has moved into the same quarters and is making their own brand of history.   Given Maine’s growing prominence in the microbrewery industry, it’s no exaggeration to say that these fairly nondescript warehouses might one day be National Historic Landmarks.Among the brightest newcomers is The Bissell B rothers Brewing Company at 1 Industrial Way, the same building where two prominent Maine breweries were born.   One is Rising Tide Brewery, a family owned concern that makes international style artisanal ales and is now the largest brewery in Portland’s booming East Bayside neighborhood, known as   “East Bayside” for its concentration of breweries.   The other is Freeport-based Maine Beer Company, founded in 2009, and known not only for its fine beers but for its commitment to good causes, expressed in the company motto, “Do The Right Thing.”As for Bissell Brothers Brewing, the microbrewery is co-owned by Noah Bissell, in his early 20’s, perhaps the country’s youngest brewery owner, and 30-something older brother, Peter.   In a relatively short time BBB has garnered a stack of laurels.   In March 2014, a headline in the  Boston Globe  crowed: “Why Bissell Brothers is the New Must-Have of New England Craft Beer Fanatics.”   Interestingly enough, BBB’s fame is base d largely on a single beer, The Substance, an IPA so remarkable that it regularly flies off the shelves.   Another BBB offering is Heartstrings Red Ale, originally made for a top Portland beer bar, Novare Res Bier Café, whose Latin name, appropriately enough, means “to start a revolution.”Also on Industrial Way is newcomer Foundation Brewing Company, co-owned by 30’s-ish Joel Mahaffey and partner John Bonney,   who both cite a “passion for brewing,” making farmhouse style ales, including spicy, fruity Belgian-style pale ales known as  saisons. Some of their top brews are Blaze, an IPA; Undertow, a dark  saison  with raisin, plum and caramelized sugar flavors; and Wanderlust #1, with aromas of tropical fruits, peach and Maine pine and flavors of peach and mango. In #1 Industrial Way’s Suite 8 is Austin Street Brewery, whose young co-owner Jake Austin began brewing beer at home on Austin Street in Westbrook, a Portland suburb.   In the tasting room, open Friday and Saturda y, sample brews by Austin and partner Will Fisher, like Patina Pale, an American-style pale ale with flavors of citrus and pine; Kon-Tiki, made with New Zealand and Australian hops, and redolent of tropical fruit; Oliver, an American brown ale fermented with coffee; and the lovely and very drinkable Catherine, a double IPA.Portland is a relatively small city, but if you don’t have a car, take heart. A young Maine couple, Zach and Allison Poole , have established a Portland based brewery tour business.   Tours on the lime green Maine Brew Bus cost $45-$65 per person, and are given virtually every day, and several times on Saturday and Sunday.   You’ll visit “old-timers” like Allagash and Rising Tide, and newcomers like In’finiti Fermentation Distillation on the Old Port’s waterfront and Bunker Brewing Company in East Bayside.   (In some cases, you’ll also get a chance to taste homemade sausages, hot dogs and brews at The Thirsty Pig, another top Portland beer bar.) On the “York County Bounty” tour, visit Banded Horn Brewing Company in Biddeford, as well as Gneiss Brewing in Limerick and Funky Bow Brewery in Lyman.   A “Northern Exposure” tour takes in the Maine Beer Company in Freeport, Baxter Brewing Co. in Lewiston and a couple of brewpubs, including Ebenezer’s in Brunswick. For years, vacationers have headed to Maine to eat lobster and fresh seafood, often ending a meal with blueberry cake or pie.   Along with great sailing, canoeing, hiking and skiing, generations of Americans have discovered that there’s good eating in Maine.     But who knew you could also drink so well in Maine? This article first appeared on Travel Squire.

Should You Put Your Photo on a Resume

Should You Put Your Photo on a Resume Should You Put Your Photo on a Resume 4In today’s tough job market, you need anything to make your resume stand out from the rest. Some cutting-edge job seekers are actually adding  photos on a resume in an attempt to make their applications more memorable. While some experts think this is a savvy strategy, others consider putting your photo on a resume to be a poor career move. Below, we look at both the positive and negative aspects of putting your photo on a resume. Here are some positive and negatives aspects to placing your photo on a resume. The Positives: It makes you easier to remember. From Pinterest to Facebook (and even LinkedIn), we all know that we live in a visually driven world. And as such, it’s easier to equate a face with a name. Without a photo, your name (unless it’s unusual) won’t stay long in the mind of a hiring manager. But attaching a photo can help you become more memorable. It personalizes your application. At any given time, there may be piles of resumes on a hiring manager’s desk. Beyond using pretty- and professional- resume paper, a clear photo can help make you more than just your previous workplace accomplishments. It shows that there’s a real person behind all the accolades. It may be necessary. If you’re in an industry that requires applications be accompanied by a photo (say, in the modeling or acting fields), then you’ll need to include a photo. In these instances, not sending a photo is actually worse. It can show off your skills. Let’s say you’re applying to be a florist. Having a professional photo (with a gorgeous floral arrangement behind you that you created) can serve as a physical representation of your workplace skills. The Negatives: It may make your resume illegible. Some companies use scanners and applicant tracking systems to input info from your resume into a mega database. Adding your photo to your resume might make it hard to read or even cause the machine to reject your resume. A super busy potential boss may not have the time to input the info, and as such, your resume might get tossed. It can cause discrimination. Sure, employers aren’t supposed to discriminate against an applicant based on factors such as age, race, gender, weight, sexual orientation, or disability. But just because they shouldn’t doesn’t mean that they won’t do it. Not having your photo on a resume removes the possibility that you might be discriminated against based on factors about you. If you had your photo on your resume and an employer doesn’t interview you, it can open a can of worms- and a potential lawsuit- for an employer. That’s why some companies will reject a resume with photos outright in order to avoid problems and litigation. It can be distracting. You’re a fairly attractive individual, so putting a professional photo on a resume is no biggie, right? Well, maybe yes and maybe no. Since humans are visual creatures, more than likely a recruiter is going to look at- and scrutinize- your photo first before your workplace skills. And while you might think being good-looking can help you land a job, in some cases, it can hurt you instead. Adding a photo to your resume might impact your application negatively and not let your talents and accomplishments shine through had you not included an image. It’s completely up to each individual job seeker if he or she chooses to include a photo on a resume. After all, in some countries, it’s mandatory to include one. But while there are many negatives to posting a pic, there are also positive ones. So take the time to figure out if it’s in your best job-seeking interest to have your photo on your resume. Readers, do you have your photo on a resume? Do you think having a pic can help or hurt you? Let us know your thoughts (and experiences!) in the comments section below!

New Class of Magnet Defies Established Science

New Class of Magnet Defies Established Science New Class of Magnet Defies Established Science New Class of Magnet Defies Established Science Its not every day someone makes a discovery that changes a scientific principle that has been accepted for 175 years. But that is exactly what Harsh Deep Chopra, professor and chair of mechanical engineering at Temple University, and Manfred Wuttig, professor of materials science and engineering at University of Maryland, have done. Their discovery of a new class of magnets defies a long-held scientific principle that iron-based magnetic materials changed their shape, but not their volume, when placed in a magnetic field. Instead, the new magnets show a large volume change, swelling up like puffer fish, says Chopra. Our findings fundamentally change the way we think about a certain type of magnetism that has been in place since 1841. That was when physicist James Prescott Joule discovered that iron-based magnetic materials elongate and constrict anisotropically, but do not change their volume, when placed in a magnetic fielda phenomenon called Joule magnetostriction. Since its discovery 175 years ago, all magnets have adhered to this principle of volume conservation. Unique Internal Structure Chopra and Wuttig discovered that when they thermally treated certain Fe-Ga, Fe-Al, and Fe-Ge alloysto approximately 760 degrees Celsius for 30 minutes, then rapidly cooled them to room temperature, the materials exhibited marked non-Joulian behavior by expanding in volume. A microscopic view of cells displaying non-Joulian magnetostriction. Image: Harsh Chopra / Temple University The response of these magnets differs fundamentally from what Joule likely envisioned, comments Wuttig. He must have thought that all magnets respond in a uniform fashion. The researchers non-Joulian magnets are characterized by large volume changes in magnetic fields. They also found the thermally treated materials contained never-before-seen microscopic cellular-like structures that allow the magnets to expand. Knowing about this unique structure will enable researchers to develop new materials with similarly attractive properties, states Wuttig. Non-Joulian magnets also generate negligible amounts of wasteful heat during energy harvesting. This transformative breakthrough has the potential to not only displace existing technologies, but create new applications due to the unusual combination of magnetic properties. For example, one area of application lies in the development of compact and efficient magnetic actuators with little thermal signature of waste heat. Conventional magnets can be used as an actuator to exert a force and open a valve, for examplebut they only operate in one direction, since all magnets are limited by Joule magnetostriction. Actuation in two directions under the Joule paradigm requires bulky stacks of magnets, which are inefficient and preclude significant miniaturization. However, indicates Chopra, non-Joulian magnets can expand in all directions when an external magnetic field is applied, which should make it possible to construct energy-efficient and compact omnidirectional actuators for mechanical devices and microelectromechanical systems. Future Applications Because these new magnets have such energy efficient characteristics, they will likely be used to develop advanced sensors, energy harvesting devices, compact micro-actuators for aerospace, automobile, biomedical, space and robotics applications, and ultra-low thermal signature actuators for sonars and defense applications. Another important point regarding is that these iron-based alloys do not include expensive rare-earth elementsby replacing existing rare-earth based magnetostriction alloys, the new magnets could provide more robust performance at far less cost. Since reporting the non-Joulian magnetism, Chopra and Wuttig have discovered similar behavior in a large group of magnetic materials that also apparently conform to the non-Joulian concept. We are now working to develop this new class of magnets and establish the scientific origins of this behavior so that they may be applied to develop new alloys, says Chopra. My lab is also exploring new forms of actuators, devices, and energy harvesting systems to bring these materials to their full potential. Since these magnets can expand in all directions, it immediately creates entirely new applications that were not previously thought possible using conventional magnetic actuators. These could range from compact, energy-efficient omnidirectional actuators and energy harvesting materials to robotic muscles. Chopra is still somewhat amazed at discovering a new physical principle that counters what has been accepted knowledge for 175 years. I learned that in order to see nature, I had to shed preconceived notions of how things work, he says. That is always the hardest part, because often one tends to fit and process new information into an existing knowledge base, even in face of those inconvenient, pesky facts that dont fit nicely into existing understanding. Itis encouraging and heartening that while old principles will hold, new ones are out there to be discovered. Mark Crawford is an independent writer. For Further Discussion Our findings fundamentally change the way we think about a certain type of magnetism that has been in place since 1841.Prof. Harsh Deep Chopra, Temple University

Air Force Flight Nurses

Air Force Flight Nurses Air Force Flight Nurses As he ran toward the airplane, 1st Lt. Charlie Thomas had a kind of wild-eyed look on his face. The blast of air from the plane’s four huge turboprop engines didn’t cause it. It was the type of gaze only a boost of adrenaline can produce. Once on the MC-130 Talon’s open ramp, he turned and looked back. A hundred yards away, an ambulance came down one of the narrow roads at Bagram Air Base, Afghanistan. It trailed a cloud of dust as it headed toward the plane. On the ambulance that sunny Sunday morning was a wounded U.S. Special Forces troop. He’d been hurt the day before in a fierce battle with al Qaeda and Taliban fighters in the Shah-e-kot Valley in eastern Afghanistan. Thomas looked inside the Talon. He was glad to see the plane was ready to carry litter patients and that six medics were aboard. Just as he had ordered. “Looks like everything’s good to go,” Thomas yelled into the loadmaster’s ear. The burly, M-16-toting “load” nodded and gave him the “okay” sign. The medics took the wounded soldier on board. Then another ambulance arrived, and soon there were two more wounded troops safely on the plane. Thomas checked them one last time. By then, two teams of doctors, nurses and medical technicians had taken charge of them. He is quoted telling a surgeon: They’re all yours now. Take good care of ’em. The men were now out of his hands, so Thomas left the plane. A hundred yards from the Talon, he stopped to watch. As it taxied away, he smiled. Since Thomas, a senior flight nurse, was exactly where he wanted to be, doing exactly what he wanted to be doing. I’m deployed where the action is. Right in the middle of the war on terrorism - getting to do my part, and that’s a rush. The Talon, from Duke Field, Fla., flew the soldiers to Karshi Khanabad, Uzbekistan. It was the second leg of a long journey that started with a helicopter ride from the battlefield. From “K-2,” the troops went to the hospital at Incirlik Air Base, Turkey. Then a C-9 Nightingale flew them to Ramstein Air Base, Germany. From there they went to nearby Landstuhl Army Regional Center for further treatment. And, later, to a stateside hospital to recover. Their journey home began with Thomas. One of three flight clinical coordinators at Bagram, his job is to help set up aeromedical evacuations. He asked for the airlift and made sure the plane arrived with the equipment, medicines, and medics needed to handle the patients. Our job is to get patients to the next level of care. Thomas is with the 137th Aeromedical Evacuation Squadron of the Oklahoma Air National Guard. Called to duty after the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks, he has spent most of his six-month tour at Bagram. He jumped at the chance to serve in Operation Enduring Freedom. Thomas’ job is one most people don’t picture a nurse doing because it deals with flight operations. That job and others  take  nurses away from their more traditional place at a patient’s bedside. For some nurses, like Thomas, it’s a welcome change, a chance to experience a part of the Air Force with which nurses seldom have contact. But when they trade in their hospital whites for green flight suits, some nurses miss providing one-on-one care. As an active duty flight nurse, Capt. K.C. Vo said: Sometimes you don’t see the difference you make because patients are with you for such a short time. A six and a half-year vet, Vo flies with Ramstein’s 86th Aeromedical Evacuation Squadron, “so you don’t get to do direct, bedside patient care.” Still, there’s no shortage of applicants for flight nurse duty. On the contrary. Though the Air Force has problems recruiting and keeping nurses, it has no shortage of flight nurse volunteers. Due to some 3,800 nurses in the Air Force, there are less than 200 authorizations for flight nurses, Capt. Linda Odom said. She’s an active duty critical care flight nurse who serves with Vo. “Flight nurse jobs are highly prized - there’s a lot of competition to get one of the slots,” she said. A 12 and one-half year vet, Odom’s one of her unit’s 32 flight nurses. Odom, like Vo, serves on an aeromedical evacuation crew. The crew cares for patients en route to and from hospitals. At Ramstein, the evacuation duty falls on the C-9 Nightingale. Final authority On board, the medical crew director - a flight nurse - is the final medical authority. It’s up to the nurse to “make medical decisions on the spot,” Odom said. There’s no staff of doctors to turn to at 24,000 feet. Only if a call is “outside your scope,” she said, “do you get on the radio and call a doctor on the ground.” It’s a huge responsibility, she said. Few nurses in military or civilian hospitals do that. At Incirlik, Capt. Michelle Maybell makes other types of decisions. She’s a crew manager and has a different focus. Instead of patients, the senior flight nurse takes care of fellow medics. We have a group that takes care of all the needs crews have so they can keep their mind on their mission. They have to think about their patients. Not about getting equipment and medicine, or how they’re going to get back to their rooms. A reservist with the 315th Aeromedical Evacuation Squadron at Charleston Air Force Base, S.C., Maybell deployed to Incirlik shortly after the Sept. 11 attacks. A volunteer, she joined the 43rd Expeditionary Aeromedical Evacuation Squadron. As a crew manager, she learns one more part of a flight nurse’s job. It’s a responsibility she doesn’t have in her civilian job as a trauma nurse coordinator, but one that will help her do that job better. And though she’d rather be flying, what she does is a “feel good” job. When I alert crews, pack them up, launch them, and go back to help them unpack after a mission, it gives me a good feeling. A sense of accomplishment. When the soldiers Thomas put on the Talon at Bagram were ready to fly from Incirlik to Ramstein, it was Maybell who got the medics ready to fly with them. “I know we did our part to make that mission a success,” she said. It’s About Caring While Europe, the Middle East, and Asia Minor are where the action is these days, flight nurses serve around the world. Their job - and that of active duty, Reserve and Guard flight surgeons, aeromedical technicians and flight crews - is to provide patients expert care in the air while en route to a hospital. That’s part of providing service members, Defense Department civilians and their families the level of care Americans expect, Lt. Col. Kirk Nailling said. The 86th’s director of operations and chief nurse, he said nurses play a key role in that process. We have plenty of people on the ground around the world who can do on-the-spot life-saving procedures. But then it’s our job to get them to more definite care. Operation Enduring Freedom is proving that. Each one of the American troops hurt in the fighting in Afghanistan has had a nurse at his side on the plane ride to the hospital. At times like that, nurses and medics bond. That was the case on the first evacuation from Incirlik to Ramstein of troops wounded in Afghanistan, Capt. Brenda Parker said. Another Ramstein flight nurse, she was the medical crew director on that flight. It was camaraderie, cohesiveness, and communication at its best. I’ve never seen such teamwork. A team effort. That’s what it takes to provide top-notch care, Nailling said. And that first-class care is something flight nurses hope to provide each time they take to the air. That, he said, “is what makes being a flight nurse so rewarding.” Thomas emerged from the tiny cubbyhole of a room where he and another nurse called home. It was in the dimly lit and dank cellar of Bagram’s Soviet-built control tower. He rubbed the sleep out of his eyes because in a few minutes more wounded were arriving. He met all the wounded. It was the only way he could see first hand how badly they were hurt. That was the first step in figuring out what kind of evacuation to coordinate. And as doctors treated or patched up the wounded, Thomas found a way to get them out of Bagram. His reward was seeing the wounded leave the base, headed for a hospital and then home. To him, that alone was thanks enough for doing a job few - if any - people know about. These guys put their lives on the line for us. Serving them is a thrill. And taking six months out of my life to do that is a small enough sacrifice in comparison to what they do.

IRS Guidelines for Book Authors for Hobbyist vs. Pro

IRS Guidelines for Book Authors for Hobbyist vs. Pro IRS Guidelines for Book Authors for Hobbyist vs. Pro Any tax advice for authors and writers should start with the question: are you a hobbyist or a pro?  Being a pro affects what you can deduct expenses related to your work as an author, so its important to understand the distinction. Making money as an author isnt easy, and even bestselling authors advise you not to quit your day job.  While many people are passionate about their writing and aspire to make a living at it, not every book author can claim to be a professional - for profit - in those most important eyes of the IRS. Here are some guidelines. Hobbyist vs. Pro Author The IRS makes a critical distinction between sole-proprietor authors (and all other hobbyists) who ply their craft vocationally rather than depend on their writing work to make a living. You are presumed to be a professional if your writing makes a profit in at least three of the last five tax years, including the current year. If your book authoring doesnt prove to be a for-profit endeavor, losses from your writing may not be used to offset other income for tax purposes (that is, if you cant prove yourself to be a pro, allowable deductions cannot exceed the gross receipts for the activity.) Of course, many self-published book authors want to make a profit and become pro (like Donna Fasano), but not everyone will. For that reason, writing is one of the professions that the IRS deemed worth deeper scrutiny because of their potential pursuit and attractiveness as avocations rather than vocations. (Others include horse and dog breeding, yacht chartering, airplane leasing, gambling, photography, fishing, farming, stamp collecting... and bowling). The Hobby Loss Rule for Authors Essentially, whats informally known as the hobby loss rule separates the hobbyist from the pros. In addition to the 3-out-of-5-years of profit, the following factors (annotated from the IRS) may further help you to determine whether your writing would likely be considered for profit or as a hobby in the eyes of the government (1): Does the time and effort put into your writing indicate an intention to make a profit? A full-time corporate day job requires you commit 35 hours or more to it - something to think about when considering your claim of professional writers hours.Do you depend on income from the activity? Be realistic here: if your rent is $1,000 a month and for the past two years your total writing income from e-book royalties  hovers around $25 for the same time period, youre not going to legitimately claim that you depend on that income. If there are losses, are they due to circumstances beyond your control or did they occur in the start-up phase of the business? The former part of the question could be interpreted as: could you have possibly made a profit had it not been for factors in the book marketplace? If youre a writer in startup, rather than a hobbyist, you have several years to show a profit (see below).Have you changed methods of operation to improve profitability? In other words, where your writing is concerned, if your profits are less than what youd like, are you thinking like a businessperson and trying to improve your income by changing the way you operate? Maybe that would mean spending money to create a multi-author blog, or paying someone to create a content marketing plan, or augmenting your income by trying to get sponsors for your blog. Do you have the knowledge needed to carry on the activity as a successful business? Being a professional book author, like running any business, is complex and challenging. How much do you know about running that business? Are you running it like a business, keeping records, keeping an eye to profitability?Have you made a profit in similar activities in the past? If you have a successful book under your belt - or even a series of articles in paid publication - thats a predictor that youre a pro. Does your writing make a profit in some years? The IRS is looking for sustained activity and profit to show youre a professional rather than an amateur dabbler. Of course, the hobbyists today can be the professionals of tomorrow. If you truly aspire to be a professional book author  but dont quite make the cut of the IRS definition, take heart. Keep plugging away at your writing and keep in mind the factors you need to develop to become considered a pro.
